The Testament of Mary delves into the psyche of such a revered icon of Christianity, and presents a respectful but probing account, not of a Western-European sanctified persona, but of a flesh and blood woman, a wife, a devout Jew, an intelligent, thinking person, and above all a mother whose heart has been shattered by her son’s torture and death. This play gives voice to a woman who, despite her fame, had no voice. It is a cri de coeur, a fierce searching for and proclamation of truth, of reality, and of authenticity.
